Dynjandi Waterfall – We departed early in the morning for our 5-hour excursion to the Dynjandi Falls. Only a few miles out of town we entered a tunnel through the mountains. Unlike other tunnels we had been in, this tunnel was more than 6 miles long and even had an intersection with another road right in the middle of the tunnel.

Among the delights of Viking’s 16-day Malta, Morocco and the Mediterranean cruise is an underground expedition inside Spain’s Nerja Caves. Examine enormous stalagmites and stalactites, the world’s widest column found in a cave, and a natural amphitheatre used as a concert venue. Of course, we could not decide on a plan of action for this jaunt. Once allowed to disembark the bus, we were able to complete the check-in process in less than 15 minutes. As part of the check-in, Viking requires proof of vaccination along with other typical documents. Along with our key cards, we were also provided with a contract tracer. We have just returned from one of the first Viking Ocean Cruises on Viking Sky.
This process was possible due to the small tracing device that is issued to each guest at embarkation. This device must be worn at all times during the cruise and collects data in the event of exposure. Luckily, all individuals flagged by the process subsequently tested negative. Not seeing any of our colleagues, we just enjoyed the views until it was time for dinner.

Isafjördur and Bolungarvik Village – After lunch on board the ship, we joined the included excursion that traveled down the Westfjords peninsula to Bolungarvik Village. On the way we stopped at the Ósvör Maritime Museum, a replica of an old fishing outpost that offers a glimpse of the lives of Icelandic fishermen until the early 20th century. An Icelandic fisherman dressed in old-fashioned, traditional fishing gear, gave us a short lecture on what it was like back in the day. It was fascinating to hear his stories and to see the replicas of some of the buildings from times past. Upon leaving Dynjandi Falls, we took the other branch of the tunnel to reach Suðureyri. Suðureyri is a remote fishing village with a population of only about 300 people, and it was the hometown of our guide.
