Patrizia devises a plot to obtain controlling interest in Gucci by acquiring some of Aldo and Paolo's shares (the other 50%). Scott wanted to make a film about the Gucci dynasty after acquiring rights to Forden's book in the early 2000s. The project languished for several years, with a number of directors and rumored actors being considered before Scott and Gaga became officially attached in November 2019. Much of the remaining cast joined the following summer, and filming began in Italy, lasting from February through May 2021. From the moment the “House of Gucci” trailer was released, Jared Leto’s transformation from svelte, long-haired actor to pudgy, balding fashion designer Paolo Gucci has been the talk of the film world. He also remembers going out to the store as Rayon, feeding the reactions he got from strangers into the character.

Adapted by screenwriters Becky Johnston and Roberto Bentivegna from the nonfiction book by Sara Gay Forden, House of Gucci charts a crowd-pleasing course from the Milanese party scene of the 1970s to a high-profile, end-of-the-century trial. At its heart is the doomed romance between Patrizia and Maurizio Gucci, the latter played behind stylishly studious glasses by cinema’s sexy nerd de nos jours, Adam Driver. It’s 1978, and Patrizia Reggiani (Lady Gaga), a middle-class social climber who works for her father’s trucking company in Milan, struts through the parking lot with butt-twitching gusto as the truck-crew members wolf whistle at her. Patrizia, in what the film presents as a very Italian way, knows what she’s got and how to use it.

Just in time for the release of the film, Leto also recently walked in Gucci’s Love Parade fashion show, which took place on Hollywood Boulevard earlier this month. To prepare, Bentivegna studied the Gucci family through Forden’s book, along with his own research prior to crafting the script. In this case, I was sent the script for another part; when I read the script, I really connected with this character and I saw a lot of opportunity for heart and humor. Once I started doing the research, I [knew] this was going to be a pretty intense transformation. In the earliest theater, actors would wear masks. It’s not only a disguise — a mask also reveals. My job is to create a life behind the mask, and Göran’s job is to find humanity in the mask.

Patrizia aggressively pursues the awkward Maurizio, charming him into love. The world premiere of House of Gucci was held at the Odeon Luxe Leicester Square in London on November 9, 2021. It was theatrically released in the United States on November 24, 2021.

In the beginning, it’s not altogether clear if Patrizia is in love with Maurizio for his money or not. What’s your read on their early relationship? It’s supposed to be opaque because I think it’s opaque in real life. Gaga took the emotions seriously, you know, she didn’t want to come across as a gold digger. It’s a much more interesting arc for her to go through those emotions the way that she’s presented it.

Unless they snuck into a screening, I don’t think they’ve seen it yet. First of all, Gaga made such a beautiful point about this, it is about a man who was murdered incredibly unjustly and regardless of what his misgivings were, it’s important to remember that and to honor that. The other thing is that this is a work of fiction. The family, for better or for worse, is an incredibly interesting, colorful one. We made the best movie we could about them. She’s definitely faithful to the character in the book.

And I think by the end of the movie, you’re with her for so long that your heart breaks for them. It also breaks for her in a way because she, by killing him, she’s really killing herself. JARED LETO I’ve heard about actors who didn’t have the character until they put on the shoes.

It was just the idea that when the investor puts his foot up, it shows Aldo who gave it to him. There’s no way anybody else could have given him that shoe, except Maurizio. So it’s very Shakespearean in that regard. It was that “clown prince” and Fredo nature of the character which jumped off the page for Leto; the actor literally having no idea what the real guy looked like.

It’s not just about how well he puts together some chemicals or chooses the right colors. “House of Gucci” has a transfixing backstabbing allure. It may be a drama about a crazy rich Euro chic Old World fashion dynasty, with a cast dominated by American actors scheming and emoting in gaudy Italian accents, but that doesn’t mean it’s some operatic piece of high camp. Based on the trailer, a lot of people apparently thought that’s just what it was going to be, yet trailers can be deceiving. “House of Gucci” is an icepick docudrama that has a great deal of fun with its grand roster of ambitious scoundrels, but it’s never less than a straight-faced and nimbly accomplished movie.

“Italy was more conservative, so it was a different look.” By the ’80s, Carboni notes, Italian women had grown confident in their fashion sense, and by the ’90s they had achieved independence. “They could embrace beauty and confidence and cleverness and not be ashamed of that,” she says. That spirit is reflected in Patrizia’s makeup arc. I said to Ridley, “I’m going to go absolutely fucking crazy.” Ridley’s genius is that he hires who he thinks is best and he doesn’t second-guess it. Jared Leto’s Paolo Gucci may be extra, but he’s the electricity that reignites the audience after listening to a tense scene where the elite discusses rich people problems in a calm tone. We need Paolo’s eccentric nature to raise the energy and keep the audience invested, lest things stay too subdued and dark. Plus, as mentioned, it helps keep the more nuanced performances of House of Gucci from becoming flat or boring, which I think would definitely be a concern if he played Paolo as straight as everyone else in the movie. LUNDSTRöM It was more important to me that Jared looked believable — we didn’t get stuck too much on Paolo’s look, because Jared has completely different bone structure. I just tried to get the personality of Paolo in there. But I had no idea what Jared was going to do with this character.

I knew I was in really good hands, but I think both of us were probably losing our fucking minds as well, because the clock was ticking. We were like a runaway train headed straight for a solid steel wall. I remember saying to Göran, “This could be astounding, but it also could be maybe the worst thing that we’ve ever done.” There was really no middle ground — it was one or the other.
